MAUI AND THE SUN

Maui and the villagers thought that the days were too short. Maui told the villagers to weave a rope out of all of the flax that they could find. Maui and his brothers set off to catch the sun. They went on and on at night and slept all day.

They came to the giant hole where the sun sleeping and they waited for the sun to wake up. The men pulled and pulled on the rope. The sun screamed and Maui told the sun that it had to promise to go slowly.

Maui beat the sun with his stick and the sun slowly went up into the sky. Now the sun goes slowly across the sky. Everyone can go fishing and hunting, the women can weave blankets and the children can play. Now everyone is happy.
